My Valentine Universal Love

Valentine’s Day, to me, is more than a date on the calendar or a ritual of cards and roses; it is a gentle, annual bell that rings to remind us who we are at the deepest level. It calls us back to our true nature — an identity not defined by accolades, possessions, or social roles, but by the simple, powerful truth that we were born to be love. For one day, and if we let it, for every day that follows, the world collectively takes a breath and remembers that love is not a commodity to be purchased or a performance to be perfected, but a living, available force that originates in the heart.

There is a vulnerability in this remembering. Most of us wear masks: protective faces shaped by fear, disappointment, and the small daily armor we craft to stay safe. Valentine’s Day offers permission to loosen those masks for a moment, to allow the sweetheart in our life — partner, child, friend, or even the stranger who needs a smile — to see the tenderness beneath. When we show love honestly, without calculation, we practice something radical: we prove that kindness doesn’t deplete us; it expands us. Love given freely returns in many forms — warmth, trust, an echo of joy — and sometimes as the quiet fulfillment of knowing you’ve helped someone else feel less alone.

But love on Valentine’s Day need not be limited to romantic expression. It is a reminder to honor all forms of connection: the loyalty of friendship, the patience of family, the compassion we extend to those we’ll never meet. This day encourages us to resurrect those affectionate impulses that everyday life suppresses — the handwritten note, the phone call to check in, the small, unannounced kindness that says, “I see you, and you matter.” Those gestures, humble and often overlooked, are the fabric of a world in which people feel held rather than hunted, forgiven rather than judged.

Each year, the sheer volume of messages, images, and tokens of affection creates a palpable energy: a collective hum of tenderness broadcast through texts, street decorations, and shared meals. I like to imagine capturing that energy—not as something to keep for ourselves, but as a resource to amplify and redirect. What if we took the love we receive and multiplied it outward, projecting it like a warm light into the wider world? What if this concentration of goodwill could be sent to the universe as an offering for peace, a deliberate intention that a gentle kindness might touch every living being?

When we do this, we participate in a form of spiritual alchemy. Personal affection transforms into universal compassion. The act of loving becomes a civic duty and a spiritual practice. Sending love outward is not a naive hope but a committed choice: to act in ways that reduce harm, to speak with empathy, to protect those who are vulnerable, and to insist on dignity for every life. It’s a ripple effect—small commitments multiplied across communities until their reach is expansive. Love then becomes a force that does not simply revolve around intimate attachments but orients us toward justice, care, and mutual flourishing.

Valentine’s Day can be a day of awakening. It reminds us that love is not seasonal; it is the underlying current of existence. When we live from that current, even the smallest gestures—offering patience in a line, listening without planning our response, standing with those in pain—become profound. If we aim to carry the day’s warmth beyond February 14, to let it inform our actions every morning and every night, we begin to transform not only our relationships but the atmosphere of our communities.

So today, as messages of love fill inboxes and bouquets brighten doorways, I take that communal energy and send it outward like a benediction. May it cover the earth with a tender kindness that knows no borders, a peace that soothes wounds, and an embrace that includes every living thing. We were born to be loved; let every day be proof of it.
